Addison's housing stock is largely postwar, which means the original driveways, service walks and stoops are all well past their design life and tend to fail within a few years of one another. The most common job here is not one slab but a set: the drive, the walk to the door and the front stoop, replaced together because they aged together. The Salt Creek Factor

Properties nearer Salt Creek can carry more subgrade moisture than the flatter ground east of town, and saturated soil is the ingredient frost heave needs. On those lots we over-excavate, build a free-draining compacted stone base rather than pouring on native clay, and pitch the surface so water leaves the slab. It is more work up front and it is the reason the slab is still flat in fifteen years.
