Elmhurst Concrete Contractor: New Concrete Next to Ninety-Year-Old Brick
Elmhurst is one of the older established communities in DuPage County and one of the most actively rebuilt. Brick Georgians and Tudors from the 1920s through the 1950s sit next to teardown rebuilds on the same block, sometimes next door to each other. Concrete work here is either restoring something that has been in the ground sixty years or matching new work to a house with real architectural character. Taber Builders has done both across the west suburbs since 1985.
The Access Problem Nobody Mentions Until Pour Day
Elmhurst lots are typically narrow and deep with tight side yards, and a concrete truck frequently cannot reach the back of the property. That means pumping or buggying the mix in from the street, which is a real cost and a real scheduling constraint. We would rather walk the site, tell you that up front and price it honestly than discover it on the morning of the pour and hand you a change order. If a contractor has quoted a rear patio in Elmhurst without discussing access, ask how the concrete is getting back there.
Matching a 1930s Facade
A bright new broom-finished slab beside a nine-decade-old brick house looks like a repair, not an improvement, however good the workmanship. Old Chicago brick and running bond stamps in muted reds and greys sit remarkably well next to that masonry. A tooled edge, a softer broom, or an exposed aggregate finish all soften new concrete without reading as decorative. On the newer builds, larger-format ashlar and cut-stone patterns suit the scale better. The right answer follows the house, not the catalogue.
Foundations for Additions and Rebuilds
Elmhurst does a lot of adding on and building up. New foundation and footing work next to an existing structure has to account for the old foundation's depth, condition and bearing, and for the fact that excavating alongside it can undermine it. This is the part of a project where cutting corners is invisible for about two years and then is not.
Who Owns the Sidewalk
The public walk usually runs through the parkway between the curb and your property line; the lead walk from there to your steps is almost always yours. They look like one path and are frequently not one responsibility. One call to the city before commissioning work can change what you pay, and we would rather you make that call than hand us the whole run by default.
