How We Build a Walk That Lasts in Montgomery

The slab is the part you see and the smallest part of the job. We excavate past the failed subgrade rather than pouring over it, bring in stone and compact it in lifts, and form to a consistent width and a positive pitch away from the house. Residential walks go down at four inches, thickened to five or six where a driveway crosses them and vehicles will run over the edge. The mix is air-entrained, which is what lets concrete survive an Illinois winter, and control joints are cut at the correct depth and spacing so the inevitable movement shows up in a straight tooled line instead of a diagonal crack across the middle.

Salt, Snowplows and the First Winter

New concrete is at its most vulnerable in its first season, and the fastest way to ruin a good walk is de-icing salt applied before it has fully cured. Use sand for traction through the first winter. After that, avoid products containing ammonium sulphate or ammonium nitrate entirely, and go easy on rock salt at the driveway apron where plow blades and meltwater concentrate. A sealer applied at the right time helps, and we will tell you when that is rather than selling you one on the day of the pour.
